New work currently being shown @portside_gallery_bristol ‘green shelter’ Henleaze Lake. These past two summers getting into the water at Henleaze Swimming Lake has seemed like even more of an escape than ever. The micro-hardships are part of the experience – undressing on the damp grass, your breath taken away as you lower yourself down the muddy steps, and the tingling on your skin as your blood recoils from the cold – this marks your entry into a different world. The only way to stay warm is to start swimming, setting off for the distant and empty end of the lake, away from the buildings and the people. For most of us it is not the kind of head down efficiency of pool-swimmers, rather a gentle, contemplative breast stroke, head up to take in the ever-changing views, to nod an acknowledgment and occasionally chat to other swimmers. Best of all, the creatures that share the water: The splash of a tail as a fish dives out of your way, the dragonflies and damselflies hunting inches above the surface, ducklings shepherded around lily pads, and a prehistoric heron flapping lazily above the lake from one perch to another. With your chin in the water, your eye-line is so low that the distances seem immense – the end of the lake is the horizon and the worries of the wider world can be put into perspective. This series of paintings is my attempt to capture the shrinking of the world and the freeing of my mind that I experience in those murky waters. . #henleazelake #bristol #coldwaterswimming #annaboss #landscape

This is my contribution ‘sea mist’ for the beautiful Sea Exhibition opening this weekend @portside_gallery_bristol The work of an invited group of 25 artists celebrating the sea 18th September to 3rd October. My work often explores the way the atmosphere progressively obscures the detail as the distance increases, and it is so often the case that the horizon at sea becomes indistinct - the sea and the sky meet and merge into one another like the paints on my palette. #bristol #sea #seamist #seascape #coastalpath #cornwall
